Joyce Hill Obituary

Joyce A. Hill passed away on March 30, 2024, at the age of 67.  She was the daughter of the late John and Anne (nee Anderson); sister of Patricia Lesser ( John); aunt of Max and Aaron; beloved "aunt" to the Cannon family. Joyce was born into an extensive network of cousins on both the Hill and Anderson sides of her family. She spent much of her childhood living in Fishtown with her Aunt Tish and the Martins.

Joyce attended Hackett Elementary, Penn Treaty Jr High and Kensington High Schools, graduating in 1974. After time at West Chester University, Joyce explored various employment opportunities. She chose a rewarding career of over 20 years, as an executive secretary at the School District of Philadelphia. Initially, she worked within the schools, (where she met " her girls" Illeene, Jessica and Gladys) then for many years, at the administrative offices in center city, until her retirement in 2021. Although she felt ready to retire, she missed lunching and time spent with her coworker and good friend, Kim.

Joyce's faith journey took her to different churches through her lifetime including Siloam Methodist Church as a youth, Church of the Living Word, and eventually, Calvary Memorial. It was along this road that she made several cherished, forever friendships, like those with the Omegans, Janet Cherry Hughes and the Unckel sisters. It was her faith that guided her through these last few difficult years of mounting health issues.

Joyce had a variety of interests. She loved to sing and through the years, had been a member of several school, church and community choirs. Joyce loved animals, especially her cats Figgy and the late Casey. She devoted her time and resources, going out of her way to feed feral and stray cats. Some of her other interests included baking, teas, candles, jigsaw puzzles, board and card games (she organized lunch time Quiddler games at work), attending JJ & Erin's soccer games, watching Philly sports, old movies and musicals and...Hugh Jackman!

There are many ways to describe Joyce. She was kind, determined, loyal and extremely generous. She had a funny sarcasm and was strong willed, yet she had the biggest heart of gold. If she loved you, she was all in. Joyce was a wonderful person and a most devoted friend. She will be greatly missed by many.
