Arlene H. Millard (nee Grookett) passed away peacefully on September 12, 2025, at the age of 89. She was born in Philadelphia on February 5, 1936 to the late John Knight Grookett and the late Annamay Rowson Grookett.
Arlene was a strong and independent woman who spoke her mind and lived life with resilience and grace. She devoted herself to raising her five children on her own, guided always by her deep faith and spirituality. She welcomed all, never caring about denomination, but instead focusing on the love of God and the strength it brought her.
A gifted musician, Arlene taught herself to play the organ and blessed others with her beautiful singing voice. Gospel music held a special place in her heart. She was also deeply artistic and creative—whether through ceramics, painting, or crocheting. Many family members were wrapped in the warmth of her handmade blankets and treasured her intricate christening outfits.
Everything Arlene did was an act of giving. She shared her talents generously, always for the good of others. Above all, she was devoted to her family, loving them unconditionally and leaving behind a legacy of strength, faith, creativity, and love.
Arlene is the devoted mother of Susan Hadik, Lyle Jericho, Lylia Wilcox (Bill), Laureen Rintye, and the late Lylene Russell (late James). Loving Grandmother of Suzanne, Johanna, William, Justin, AJ, Helena, Lylene, Brandi, Jaclyn, William III, Dana, Cynthia, Richard, and Milissa. Also survived by her 33 great grandchildren. Dear sister of the late Jeanette Marrow (late John). She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather and celebrate Arlene's life Wednesday September 24, 2025 beginning at 9:30am in the Hubert M. McBride Funeral Home 2357 East Cumberland Street Philadelphia, PA 19125, followed by her funeral service 11am. Interment will take place after in Oakland Cemetery.
