James Flanagan Obituary

James P. Flanagan passed away May 28, 2021 at the age of 62. Lifelong resident of Fishtown, Jim was the beloved son of the late Thomas Sr. and Catherine (Kellenbenz) Flanagan. Dear brother of Patrick, Thomas Jr. & Eileen, Dennis, Catherine & Steven Malinowski, Theresa & Henry Baranowski Jr and Charles & Denise Flanagan.

Nephew to Patrica A. Flanagan. Proud and dedicated Godfather to Thomas J. Flanagan III, Sarah Baranowski, Catherine Boytos ( Malinowski ) and the late Becky Baranowski.

Not a father to children of his own, Jim was the uncle and great uncle to 17  nieces and nephews, 22 great nieces and nephews and 2 great great nephews.

Jim was a graduate of Holy Name of Jesus School and Mastbaum Vocational Technical High School.

Jim held many positions throughout his life; most notably he held the role of committeeman for the 31st Ward 5th Division. The highlight of Jimmy's political career occurred when President Bill and First Lady Hilary Clinton were in Philadelphia on October 29, 1996 for Clinton's Presidential Address held on Hill Field at The University of Pennsylvania. After an extensive investigation to obtain government security clearance, Jim was selected to chauffeur Hilary Clinton to and from the airport to University of Pennsylvania in West Philadelphia. The First Lady was so taken by the special tie Jim purchased specifically for that day, honoring her commitment to children's issues, that she autographed it!  She then insisted on introducing Jim to President Clinton. Jim was beyond excited to then have his picture taken with them both of them.

Jim was also a manager at Farmer’s Choice, a toll collector for the Pennsylvania Turnpike, a florist at Kennedy Florist, and most recently served as assistant at McElvarr/McBride Funeral Home.

Jim will be greatly missed by his family and friends but they will find comfort in knowing he is at peace with his loved ones who have gone before him.

Private Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Holy Name of Jesus Church at  E.  701 Gaul Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19125. In lieu of flowers donations in Jim’s memory can be made to Holy Name of Jesus Church.
