James J. McKenzie "Butch" passed away on May 1, 2026 at the age of 88. He was born in Philadelphia on February 24, 1938 to the late James J. Sr. and Catherine (nee Telakowics).
James was a lifelong resident of Philadelphia, a city he carried with him in both pride and spirit throughout his life. A proud Navy veteran, he served his country with honor and dedication—values that remained evident in the way he lived each day.
He found great joy in life’s simple traditions, especially his annual trips to the Jersey Shore, where he faithfully returned to the same rental year after year. Those vacations became a cherished constant, filled with familiar sights, routines, and memories that brought him comfort and happiness.
An avid sports fan, James followed all levels of competition with enthusiasm—from his beloved professional home teams to local high school matchups. He had a deep appreciation for the details of the game, always keeping up with statistics and never missing a chance to read the newspaper, no matter where he was.
Above all, James was a devoted family man. He loved his family deeply and found his greatest joy in the time spent with them. His grandchildren, in particular, held a special place in his heart, and the moments he shared with them will remain treasured memories for years to come.
He will be remembered for his loyalty, his traditions, and the love he gave so freely to those around him.
James is the beloved husband of the late Ann "Nancy" (nee Hagan) McKenzie. Devoted father of Nancy Amato (Pasquale), Cathy McKenzie, and the late Deborah Stark (late Al). Loving grandfather of Bobby Stark, Shannon Greer, Nicole Battestelli (Jason), Joseph Amato (Michele), and Lisa Amato (Matt Poissant). Dear brother of Catherine "Lovie” Carroll (Dan). Sadly missed by his 7 great grandchildren and his nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing and funeral Saturday May 9, 2026 beginning at 9:30am in the Hubert M. McBride Funeral Home 2357 East Cumberland Street Philadelphia, PA 19125, followed by his funeral service at 11am. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
