Joan was originally from Manayunk and moved to Fishtown at an early age. She graduated from John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in the early 50's. She went to work for Grip-Flex Corp. in Kensington, where they manufactured braiding and decorations for military and other type uniforms. She worked there for 25 plus years, retiring when she was 65. After her retirement she became the unofficial "Mayor " of Gordon Street. She would take in packages for the neighbors and even put their trashcans back in front of their houses. You could say she was a bit feisty and very proud of her Irish heritage. In later years she became a fixture at Garrison's Market.
Joan is the mother of Denise Whiting ( Robert Sr.,) and the late Steven Righter. Grandmother of Robert Whiting Jr., and Tabatha Perocier ( Willie ). Great grand mom of Angelina, William, Samantha, Giovanni, Tabatha, Robert III, Izabella, Mia, Steven Jr., Parker and Bryce. She was predeceased by her siblings Daniel, Peggy, Mary and Bernice. Also survived by nieces and nephews.
