John “Jack” O’Mara

John O’Mara “Jack” passed away on February 24, 2023 after he bravely battled clear cell renal carcinoma for the last 2 years. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Jack is the beloved husband of 46 years to the late Patricia “Trish” (nee Chuck). Devoted father to John “Jackie”, Annemarie Mager (Michael), Matthew, and the late Patricia Prieb (nee Fitzgerald). Loving Pop of Christina, Stephanie, TJ, Madelyn, and Molly. Dear brother of Donna Whelan (Bill), Brian (Sue), and the late Margaret Mary and Kevin. Sadly missed by his relatives, friends, and coworkers. 

Jack was born to the late John and Margaret (nee Morgan). He was raised in Philadelphia in St Anne’s parish, and remained in the area until July 2019 when the family moved to Delaware County. Jack graduated from North Catholic High School, Class of 1973. He was a skilled mechanic, a gear-head.  He loved to work with his hands, to build things, or fix things.  

Jack had a love for cars and a need for speed, whether it was race cars, classic cars, or street cars. He loved to spend time at Atco Dragway as both a participant and a spectator.  He also enjoyed going to car shows. Another of his favorite pastimes was visiting the beach, especially Cape May.

He was a loving, selfless and caring father. He was the best pop to his grandkids. He had a heart of gold. 

In the words of his children, “Our dad gave our family the greatest gift. The gift of his time. The best advice he ever gave us was, you can always make more money, but you can’t make more time. Your most valuable asset is your time.
It’s not the easiest gift to give. There’s nothing grand about it. It’s a gift that accumulates slowly over the years, taking shape through the steady gift of attention and devotion.  We now have so many precious memories to treasure for our lifetime. If you want to honor our dad’s memory, spend more time with your children, your parents or those you love and create a new memory. “

Relatives and friends are invited to gather and celebrate his life on Friday March 3, 2023 beginning at 9:30am in St. Anne’s Church (upper) 2328 East Lehigh Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19125. Funeral Mass 10:30am. Interment will private, at a later date, and Jack will be laid to rest with his beloved Trish. In lieu of flowers and for those wishing, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
