Joseph H. McIntyre passed away at home on November 24, 2023 at the age of 76. He was born in Philadelphia to the late Henry J. "Mac" and Anna May (nee Haughey).
Joseph is survived by his sisters Grace Gorman (late Thomas), Annemarie Malkowski (Jerry) and his brother Thomas (Nell). Also survived by his many nieces and nephews, one aunt, one uncle, and many cousins. He is preceded in death by his brother Henry "Harro" and his wife Peggy, his sister Mary, and his godson and nephew Patrick.
Joseph was born and raised in the same home and parish where he remained throughout his entire life. He graduated from St. Anne School in June of 1961 and then became a Falcon! Joe graduated from North Catholic High School for Boys in June 1965 and remained a loyal alum forever. After high school, he was an apprentice for the Sheet Metal Workers Union. He also held various jobs. The final two were spent working for National Lead and his last 29 years working for the School District of Philadelphia. He started as a clerk and then worked in (PONY) the mailroom at 440, from which he retired in August 2013. Joe was also a union member of the PFT/AFT.
Joe was not the athletic type or the boisterous type. He kept to himself, had a small circle of friends, and did things his way. If you knew him, you knew he was a man of few words. He was a quiet book of knowledge who rooted for the Phillies and knew many baseball statistics. For a number of years, Joe was a Republican Committee Man in the 31st Ward, serving the 14th division. He knew politics and even cast his final vote this past November 7th. War facts were another of the statistics that Joe kept in reserve to add to conversation.
For many years, Joe was easily recognizable by a pipe and then a cigar from his lips. Cigars and lottery tickets were a vice for Joe. Fortunately, he quit the smoking in 2017 but occasionally felt lucky playing a daily number or church lotto.
Joe was always faithful to his Catholic upbringing and his church of St. Anne. He was also very charitable. He received more mail from charities than anyone has ever known! Joe will be greatly missed but his family takes comfort that he will be reunited in heaven with his loved ones who have gone before him.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing and funeral Friday December 1, 2023 from 9:30am-10:45am in St. Anne Church (lower) 2328 East Lehigh Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19125. Funeral mass 11am. Interment Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, and in honoring Joe's charitable nature, the family respectfully requests and appreciates memorial contributions to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Eastern Pennsylvania P.O. Box 22470 New York, NY 10087-2470 or http://www.givenow.lls.org or to a charity of the donor's choice.
