It is with profound sadness that the family of Joseph C. Gabor "Smo" announces his sudden passing on December 12, 2024, at the age of 41. He was born on August 27, 1983.
Smo was a lifelong Fishtown resident. He attended Holy Name of Jesus Grade School and then North Catholic High School. From a young age, Joseph was an athlete who loved baseball, spending much of his time at Newt's and the Tot Lot and achieving the title of Stick Ball Champion. It was during this time that he formed many of his lifelong friendships.
To know Smo was to love him. He was quirky and funny and loved with his whole heart. He was devoted to his family, especially his mom, as he was a true "Mama's boy". Although his life was met with many trials and struggles, he always tried to be a good person. He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched.
Joseph is the beloved life partner of Heather Kovack. Cherished son of Margaret (Gilbert Newton) and Joseph (Theresa). Dear brother of Leslie (Jimmy Thompson), Samantha Smith (Billy), and Justin. Adoring uncle of LB and Paisley. Loving grandson of Margie Maines, Patricia Gabor, and the late Charles and Rita Tobin. Sadly missed by his furbaby Queenie and his many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather and celebrate his life Saturday December 28, 2024 beginning at 10am in the McElvarr Funeral Home 1415-17 East Susquehanna Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19125 (Fishtown) followed by his funeral service at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers and in honoring Smo's love of animals, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to the PSPCA at the address listed below.
