Kenneth Smith Obituary

Kenneth Wayne Smith  (Ken) suddenly passed away on February 14, 2024 at the age of  84.

Ken was born in 1947 and raised in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia. Soon after high school, Ken went off to Korea to serve in the United States Army.  He was discharged from the Army in 1964 and started a career with General Electric as an electrical engineer. Ken returned to Fishtown to build a life for himself. Soon after, he met the love of his life Margie. They married in 1972 and they built a beautiful home with Margie and his son, Jerry, on Palmer Street. In 1990 his wife Margie suffered a massive stroke which left her speech impaired, partially paralyzed at the young age of 42. Being the selfless husband that he was, Ken immediately devoted absolutely all of his energy to partnering with physical, occupational and speech therapist to help Margie learn how to talk and walk again ensuring that she had the best quality of life possible. In addition to caring for Margie, Ken enjoyed surrounding himself with the people he loved. Family BBQ’s, Holidays, Sunday Dinners, Sleepovers with his Granddaughters which always included “Pop’s Famous Pancakes” for breakfast. His home was filled with love and laughter and on a summer day you could hear the sound of top hits from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s coming from the backyard. He was a huge Philadelphia Sports fan and spent many days and nights at the ballpark, the rink and the field cheering on the Phillies, Flyers and Philadelphia Eagles. In his later year, he enjoyed spending time with his Great Grandchildren, doing crossword puzzles and watching murder mysteries.

Ken was extremely intelligent, and had a great sense of humor. He was a planner, provider and caregiver to many. The joy of Ken’s life was enjoying his family and unconditionally loving his spitfire of a wife Margie. In February 2023, Margie passed away which left Ken completely devastated and heartbroken. The last 12 months have been extremely difficult for Ken and his family has solace knowing he is finally reunited with the love of his life in eternity. The Smith family is so proud of the legacy that Ken created for his family and they will strive to make he and Margie proud with each passing day until they are all reunited again in paradise.
