Louis was born and raised in Fishtown, where he built a life centered on family, hard work, and loyalty. He married his soulmate, Dot, and together they purchased their forever home in 1971. Their family quickly grew with the arrivals of Little Lou and Sis.
In 1992, Lou and Dot opened their hearts and their home once again, taking in four of their nieces and nephews and raising them as their own. Their love for family never stopped there—they later helped raise two of their grandchildren, pouring the same devotion and guidance into every child who entered their lives.
Two people Lou touched especially deeply were his niece, Jen Buck, and Mike Carberry, the father of his granddaughter. Both loved and respected Lou as if he were their own father.
Outside of being a devoted Dad and Pop Pop, Lou worked for decades at Penn Valley, where he repaired forklifts with skill, pride, and an unrivaled work ethic. At home, he was a Jeopardy wizard, a passionate (and loudly opinionated) Flyer's fan, and someone who would never turn down a breakfast date—no matter how early it was. His friends knew him as a loyal companion and unforgettable company, with one-liners that will be repeated for years to come.
We take comfort in knowing that his dear friend—and favorite bartender, Kelly—is waiting for him in heaven with a cold beer served in a frosted mug. Lou’s love, humor, and presence will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
He is the beloved husband of Dot Rhoads Riess, devoted father of Justin Carlson (Alexis), Matthew Carlson (Melissa), Bridgett Carlson, and the late Louis Riess Jr, Louisa Riess, and Barbara Carlson. Proud grandfather of Brandon, Morgan, Kyla, Justin, Will, Joey, Brianna, Karissa, and the late Sammy. Dear brother of Harry Riess (the late Stephanie), John Riess (the late Irene), Anna Romanies (the late Sonny), and the late Tuck Riess and Joan Gormisky. Sadly missed by his nieces and nephews.
