Mary Smith Obituary
Mary E. Smith (nee Carlin) passed away on October 19, 2022 at the age of 73. She is the beloved wife of the late Harry R. Smith and cherished life partner of over 30 years to Stanley Hughes. Devoted mother of Brian Smtih (Crystal), Michael Hughes (RoseAnna), and the late Kristopher, William, and Bobby Smith. Dear sister of Hope Rucci (late Thomas), Janet Valente (Tony), Roger Carlin, and Theresa Fuller (Edward). Sadly missed by 2 generations of grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, where she married Harry Smith. She raised five boys mostly on her own and she loved them more than life. Her boys were her everything until the day she died. She made sure they were happy and that they knew just how much she loved them.
Mary was a strong woman. She buried a husband and three sons, and even after all that pain, she continued to go on for her family. Mary enjoyed going to the casino, spending time with her family, shopping, playing bingo, and going to flea markets. She loved talking, especially on the phone, for hours. She also loved her two Yorkies Freddy & Buddy. Mary was a collector of many things but loved her dolls.
Mary moved to the shore in 1996 and remained living there until the day she died. She was in a relationship with Stanley Hughes for almost 30 years; they loved each other very much and were with each other until the end. Mary also loved her grandchildren & great grandchildren. They were her life. She always wanted to see them or just talk to them and she always wanted to make sure they were happy. Mary was very outspoken and didn't care what she said or when she said it. She had many friends and cherished them all.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing and funeral Wednesday October 26, 2022 beginning at 10:30am in the McElvarr Funeral Home 1415-17 East Susquehanna Ave. Philadelphia PA 19125 (Fishtown). Funeral service 12pm, with Pastor Dominic Pennachietti officiating. Mary will be laid to rest, with her beloved family, in Palmer Cemetery at a later date.
