On January 2, 2022 Richard D. Mulcahy suddenly passed away in the hospital surrounded by “his girls”. Richard was the eighth child of the late Frank and Ruth (nee Hammitt) Mulcahy. He is survived by Sonny (deceased) (Eileen), Joseph (Dolores), John (late Mildred), Leo (deceased as a toddler), William (Betty), Maryann DeLeo, Philip (Claire), and Theresa Hepp (late Joseph). He also has numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces & nephews. He was predeceased several years ago by his long time girlfriend Patty O’Neill.
Richard never married but called Theresa, Jennifer, and Christine “his girls”. He stepped into the role of father for the three girls after their father passed away. He was always there to help and celebrate all of their accomplishments and life’s special occasions. He also had a very special and close relationship with his great nieces Taylor and Chelsea, who he loved, supported, and was always there for them. Richard formed a special bond and very close relationship with his “little buddy” Joey. He visited him 2-3 times each week. We will make sure that Joey remembers his Uncle Richard and knows how much love and happiness he brought him in 3 short years.
Richard was a graduate of St. Anne School and a 1967 graduate of North Catholic. He served in the Air Force. His biggest love was the Philadelphia Fire Department. He retired after 32 years as a lieutenant in 2005. Richard was stationed at many engine and ladder companies all over the city. He finished out his career in the station that our grandfather started at.
Richard was a devoted son and friend. He was always there to help anyone in need. He was a proud Irishman and loved Irish music, especially “Danny Boy”. Our family joke was that he would make up his own words to songs or just sing “dah dah dah”. He always said that he “knew” the words and the singers didn’t.
Richard was an avid Flyers fan. He and little Theresa took many trips to the games and Flyers Carnivals. He always bought her jerseys for her favorite players. He helped create Theresa into a Flyers nut.
"Richard was not only my brother but my best friend and “right hand”. We were always there for each other. He was always by my side. I can’t imagine not having him here with me. He has left a huge void in my life and will be forever missed and loved. I know that he is at peace with our mom, dad, Sonny, Joe, and Patty. I have wonderful memories that will last forever".
His viewing will be held in St. Anne’s lower church on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 1pm with mass to follow at 2:30pm. He will be buried at Washington Crossing National Cemetery on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at 10:30am. Richard loved dogs and the Fireman’s Hall so donations in his name to either the SPCA or Fireman’s Hall would be greatly appreciated.
