It is with profound sadness that the family of Robert J. Kandel "Bob", age 65, announces his passing on July 30, 2026 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. He was surrounded by the love of his family. Bob was born in Philadelphia and was a proud resident of the Fishtown section of the city for many years. He was a die-hard Fishtowner and very proud of his roots. For the last few years, he was a resident of South Carolina.
Bob was an incredibly hardworking man who spent his career as a truck driver. Even when he wasn’t on the job, he was rarely still—always fixing something for someone in need, lending a helping hand, or doing whatever it took to provide for his family. He was a simple man who found joy in life’s little things: listening to good music, especially Led Zeppelin, sharing laughs, and spending time with the people he loved most.
Bob had a friendly spirit and never met a stranger. No matter where life took him, he had a way of making friends along the journey. He loved to joke around and could always bring a smile to those around him.
Like many, Bob faced his own struggles, but he never let them define who he was. He recognized his shortcomings with humility and chose to use his experiences to encourage and help others who were facing similar challenges. His kindness and generosity knew no bounds—he would quite literally give you the shirt off his back to help someone in need. Above all else, Bob will be remembered for his hardworking nature, compassionate heart, unwavering generosity, and the love he had for his family and friends.
Robert is the cherished son of the late Richard and Mary (nee Ludwig) Hammond. Beloved husband of Lauren Ratigan-Kandel (nee Lee). Devoted father of Shannon Kandel (Abdirahman Ali), Amanda Dayton (Richard), Robert J. Kandel Jr. "Little Bobby", Chelsea Libey (Jerry), and stepfather of Amy Ratigan, Nicole Ratigan, Kristyn Craig (Robert), and Jayson Ratigan (Courtney). Loving Pop-Pop to his 28 grandkids, among them his little side kick and partner in crime Kameryn. Dear brother of Edward Kandel (Donna), Mary Sautner (Jim), and Richard Hammond Jr. (Bridget). Sadly missed by his nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing and funeral Friday August 7, 2026 beginning at 9am in St. Anne Church (lower) 2328 East Lehigh Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19125. Funeral mass 11am. Committal Resurrection Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest with his loving parents. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to the Cpl.Charles Glenn III Memorial 1022 Palmer Street Philadelphia, PA 19125, a cause that was near to Bob's heart and that he dedicated much of his time to while living in the neighborhood.
