Sandra L. McCandless “Sandy” passed away on December 19, 2023 after a courageous battle with Metastatic Squamous Cell Carcinoma. She was born on June 24, 1964 to the late Anthony and Helen (nee Sawsky) Szostek.
Sandy grew up in the Fishtown/Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia in Immaculate Conception parish. She hung at Tip Top playground, where she developed her love of basketball and softball. Her passion for these two sports would continue throughout her life and she was named the “grand slam queen”.
Sandy met the love of her life, Michael, at the age of 15, and the two were married on July 29, 1989. Together they raised their children and later welcomed grandchildren. In the last few years, Sandy and Mike moved from the city to Wagontown, where they could experience the simplicity they both loved.
Sandy loved nature, especially sunflowers, butterflies, and horses. She also loved all types of music and being surrounded by those she loved. Sandy’s door, and her arms, were always open to anyone and she was always the life of the party.
Sandy was a kind-hearted, up-front, and honest person. She was stubborn, strong, determined, optimistic and she did her best to keep a smile on her face despite what she was going through. Sandy was truly and inspiration and she will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Sandy is the beloved wife of Michael Sr. Devoted mother of Michael Jr. (Nicole), Sandy (Kasey), and Kaitlyn (Demi). Loving grandmother of Angelina, Alana, Michaela, and Amiyah. Sadly missed by her extended family and her many friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing and funeral Saturday December 23, 2023 beginning at 8:30am in St. Anne Church (lower) 2328 East Lehigh Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19125, followed by her funeral mass at 10:30am.
