Sivon Mam Obituary

Obituary

We remember a life beautifully lived and a heart deeply loved. Sivon Yong Mam, was born in Cambodia on September 17th, 1950. On May 14th, 2024, at the age of 73, she took her leave from this world, leaving it a little dimmer in her absence.

She leaves behind her devoted husband, Heang Mam, with whom she shared life for 58 years. Her legacy lives on in her daughter, Sokchea (and her husband, Steven), and her sons, Bolli (and his fiance, Shay), Douglas, and Daniel.  In addition, six of her children have already preceded her in eternity. Sivon was also blessed with 16 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Sivon’s life journey was as remarkable as it was challenging. In 1978, political turmoil forced her family to leave their home in Cambodia. They sought refuge in a camp on the Cambodia-Thailand border, later moving to another camp in Thailand in 1979. In 1981, with three little ones and another on the way, they embarked on a journey across the ocean to the United States, carrying little more than hope and their documentation.

Their journey led them to Philadelphia, the “City of Brotherly Love”. The city offered them hope, but also presented its own set of challenges. One of their first homes was near a grand church in West Philly. It was here, in 1982, that a knock on their door introduced them to a woman from the “big domed” church. This woman, “Mimi” Miller, extended an invitation to service and became a cherished friend who left an indelible mark on their lives.  After moving to North Philly, they found their place in the local branch of the New Apostolic Church. This spiritual haven has been their sanctuary for over 40 years, a constant in their lives even after they moved out of the city.

Sivon’s life was a symphony of love, resilience, and faith. Her memory will forever be in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. As we bid her farewell, we celebrate the extraordinary life she lived and the profound love she shared.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing and funeral Saturday May 18, 2024 beginning at 8:30am in New Apostolic Church 1200 E. Cayuga Street Philadelphia, PA 19124, followed by her funeral liturgy at 10am. Interment Northwood Cemetery.
